Threat of landslide-damming of rivers and streams in BC, with implications for salmon – Speaker is Dr. John Clague
On July 30th 2024, a large landslide occurred on the Chilcotin River, about 30km upstream of the Fraser River, and 22km upstream of the Farwell Canyon Bridge. The debris covered an area of 1000m x 600m and was 30 m deep. Flood warnings were issued for areas upstream and evacuation orders for areas immediately downstream.
The area is known as “Nagwentled” by the local Tsilhqot’ indigenous people, and it translates roughly to “landslides across the river”.
The river is also an important waterway for several types of salmon, such as the Taseko sockeye.
Dr. John Clague is an earth scientist and expert in natural hazards and will be talking to us about the many factors that contribute to these landslides and the subsequent risks of flooding. He will also discuss the impact on salmon in these areas.
This presentation will be in person at Vancouver Unitarians in Hewett Hall and also via Zoom Video Conferencing. On the Monday preceding the event, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in the weekly e-News. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm. Non-members are welcome and should Email enews@NatureVancouver.ca a few days ahead to register for the link.
