When

02/Jul/2022
12:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Event Type

Enjoy a mid-day exploration of the extensive sandflats and eelgrass beds during the low spring tides. We will walk several kilometres to the water’s edge as we identify the unique floral and faunal inhabitants. Learn the historical background of many of these species that have adapted to living in Boundary Bay, including some evidence of impacts from the 2021 Heat Dome. Plan on a 2.5-3 hour beach walk that goes rain or shine. Please wear appropriate attire for sun (visor and sun screen), wind or rain. Rubber boots or waterproof booties are necessary to reach the eelgrass beds; or, be willing to get your feet wet. Bring water and a snack. Please contact your leader, Sheila Byers, scbyers@telus.net if you have any questions or would like to carpool. Trip limit is 15 participants. Registered persons receive priority. Please read NV Covid policy.

DIRECTIONS: Follow Highway 99 south onto Highway 17 and head west towards the BC Ferry terminal. Exit left (south) at the intersection with 56th St leading to Tsawwassen. At 12th Avenue, turn left (east) and follow the road as it turns southward into Boundary Bay Road. Watch for 6B Ave and follow signs to Boundary Bay Regional Park, past Cammidge House, to Centennial Beach. There is lots of parking near the Butler’s Beachside Cafe. Meet at the beach edge adjacent to the green mat walkway that leads to the beach just past the Cafe at 12:30 PM. Sheila will be sitting on a log and carrying a white bucket.
