Birding Walk in Hastings Park Sanctuary
Join Doug Cooper for a two-hour bird walk at the Hastings Park Sanctuary in East Vancouver. The pathway is wide, gravelled and mostly level. Washrooms are available on site.
The overwintering duck flock is beginning to grow. Pileated Woodpeckers have been reported several times this fall from the sanctuary, as has a Red-breasted Sapsucker. The biggest local news is that a resident pair of Great Blue Herons nested in the sanctuary last summer and successfully raised two vocal and feisty chicks. As well, the local Cooper’s Hawk pair again raised at least two chicks. White-throated Sparrows have been reported a number of times this fall. The species does appear to be more common in recent years. A Wilson’s Snipe was seen near the steps leading down to the fishing dock.
Pre-registration is required, and the trip is limited to 12 participants. Contact Doug Cooper at hdcooper@gmail.com to register for the trip and for information on the meet-up location. Priority will be given to Nature Vancouver members.
