Newcastle Island

Explore Newcastle Island Provincial Marine Park.

Newcastle Island has scenic trails and shorelines, blond colour phase raccoons and a long cultural history.

Walks/hikes will be on June 8 and June 9. The destination, distance and degree of difficulty will depend on the group.

You can register for one or both days. Please register with Daphne Nagorsen (daphnehn@gmail.com) and indicate which day(s) you plan to attend. Please register by Wednesday, June 6.

Getting to Newcastle Island: Travel to Nanaimo via the Departure Bay ferry from Horseshoe Bay. The Newcastle Island ferry leaves from Maffeo Sutton Park, 2.5 km from Departure Bay. There are local buses that run from Departure Bay to Maffeo Sutton Park.

The Newcastle Island ferry runs every half hour. This ferry is $5 (return trip) and is cash only. The usual ferry is a 12 seat ferry.

Spending the night: For trip participants who want to make this a multiday trip, there are campsite available on Newcastle Island (reserve through BC Parks) or other types of accommodation in Nanaimo.
