Join us for a morning outing at Hastings Park Sanctuary! All are welcome to this casual sketchbook journaling session. No previous art experience needed. Bring a pencil or pen; a notepad or sketchbook; and any other favourite, portable art materials. Dress for the weather. Bring a snack/lunch, sunscreen, water bottle. Optional supplies: camera and/or magnifying glass.
We will start as a group with trip leader Vicky Earle for a short walk about the park to get familiar with its layout, stopping along the way to sketch whatever catches our eye and curiosity. Sketchbook journaling is a great way to unwind, collectwildlife sightings, engage all our senses and be more present in the moment. Vicky will share the benefits of nature sketchbook journaling and will be happy to answer questions.
Hastings Park is located on Vancouver’s east side and is the second largest park in the City of Vancouver (after Stanley Park). It was established in 1889 when the Province of BC granted 62 hectares (154 acres) of land to the City, most of which is currently occupied by the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) and the Hastings Park Racecourse. In 1996, the Hastings Park Sanctuary opened to the public and consists of four hectares (9.9 acres) of wood-lined, winding pathways, a series of bridges, riparian plantings and a pond stocked with rainbow trout. It is considered a “birding hotspot” with more than 145 species recorded throughout the year. Some common birds to expect in June include ring-necked ducks, Cooper’s hawks, pileated woodpeckers, green herons, double-crested cormorants, flycatchers, hummingbirds and warblers.
To preregister please contact caroline@naturevancouver.ca. Limit 15 participants. Priority to Nature Vancouver members. This event is weather dependent. Directions and map will be provided to registrants.
