Guided Walk at Yew Lake / Bowen Lookout at Cypress Provincial Park
Join leader Gail Ross on a 2 ½ hour walk to discover and learn about some of the special flora and faunal species found in this popular BC Park.
The Yew Lake area contains the most easily accessible subalpine old-growth forest and meadows in the Lower Mainland. Within this area are wetlands, terraced ponds, a wide range of subalpine shrubs and wildflowers, old-growth forests, 125 species of birds and a diversity of wildlife species. Some species in the park are uncommon and are at the limit of their range.
The Yew Lake Trail loop is 2 km in length, with an elevation gain of 20m. The trail to Bowen Lookout is another 2 km in length with an elevation gain of 150 m. Bowen Lookout provides a panoramic view of Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast. Please note that dogs are not allowed within the Yew Lake Trail area due to the sensitive species which are found there.
We will meet at 9:15 am at the main lodge. Walk underneath the covered area until you come to Big Bear Sports. Then come inside to sign the waiver form and use the washroom before we head out on the trail at 9:30 am.
Allow 30 minutes from the Lions Gate Bridge to get up the mountain. There are no parking fees during the summer season.
The Yew Lake Trail / Old-Growth Loop walk will be offered rain or shine. However, if it is a rainy day the group can decide whether to include the Bowen Lookout Trail or not.
Please bring good footwear (no sandals etc.) and warm clothing / raincoat in case it is a wet day and a sun hat and sunscreen for a sunny day. Bring water and a snack or light lunch to enjoy at the Viewpoint. Plan to be on the trail for approximately 2 ½ hours.
To register, please email gailross1@telus.net and include the number of people that will be with you. The size of the group will be limited to 16.
