Geology of Cypress Provincial Park – difficulty level D5
Sunday August 5th 2018
Geology of Cypress Provincial Park.
A joint field trip for Nature Vancouver and Friends of Cypress Provincial Park Society
Trip leaders: David Cook and Bill Kinkaid
Meeting time and place: 11:00 am in the parking lot near the Black Mountain Lodge of Cypress Provincial Park. (NOT the new Cypress Creek Lodge).
Duration: Approximately five hours.
Terrain & elevation gain: We will be hiking up a steep ski run with a loose, pebbly surface which can be slippery on descent so deep-tread hiking boots with ankle support and poles are highly recommended. 500 metres elevation gain.
Length of hike: 7 km round-trip.
Description: A slow hike with many stops to look at the geology along the way. We begin from the parking lot at Cypress Bowl downhill ski area up the Collins Ski Run to the first peak of Mt Strachan (1442 m). We will have lunch in an area of sub-alpine pasture recovering back to forest after an ancient lightning fire. The geological highlights will be the first summit of Mt Strachan where glaciation has sculpted a remarkable polished pavement over 400 million year old metamorphic rocks and enormous boulders brought by the ice from the north and dumped by the retreating glaciers.
Be prepared: This is a full day’s hike, so bring lunch, water and prepare for changes in weather.
Registration is required. Because of a need to limit the size of the group and because the event may be rescheduled due to weather, registration is required. Contact David at 604-924-0147 or cookeco2@yahoo.com to register.
