EcoWALK in Pacific Spirit Regional Park
Examining plants & their associated communities of organisms in Pacific Spirit Regional Park
This EcoWalk is the first in a multi-part series of EcoWALKs and other activities that looks at Phytobiomes. The series, lead by Dr. Laura Super, runs January to April (for adults and families). Come to one or all in the series: the January 7 walk is adult-focused, and the walk on Feb.4 is for families.
In this EcoWALK, we will discuss the concept of phytobiomes – a systems thinking approach to examine plants and their associated organisms (macro and micro) plus the influence of environment factors. After an initial discussion of what are phytobiomes, we will simulate part of the process that scientists use to study phytobiomes. Working in teams we will run transects along the Camosun trail, a forested area Southwest of Camosun Bog to collect data on, particularly the vegetation. Finally we will reflect on the process via STEAM, Science + Art (e.g. via poetry, sketching.
The data collected will be posted online for access by participants and for use in the next part in this Phytobiome series: Zoom learning and activity session , date = TBA (weekday evening late Feb. or early March).
Location: Forested area west of Camosun Bog.
Meeting Place: North entrance to Camosun Bog (Camosun St. south of 19th Ave.) Google Map
