🌿 Moss Walk in Malcolm Knapp Research Forest
🌿Marvellous Mosses
Hike Location: Malcom Knap Research Forest – Maple Ridge
Trip Leader: Terry McIntosh
Meeting Point:: supplied after registration
Meeting Time: 10:00am.
Join UBC moss expert Terry McIntosh and members of the NV Botany committee for a leisurely exploration of some of BC’s many marvelous mosses. With an estimated 980 species of Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts), BC has the richest diversity of any province or territory in Canada and greater diversity than all of the USA west of the Rockies.
While present in most wilderness and garden spaces, these diverse and beautiful plants are easily overlooked since they are rarely more than 1-2cm tall. Rich golds and russets blanket our bogs, while our forests are carpeted in greens that range from olive and emerald to almost black. When skies are grey and deciduous plants are going dormant, byrophytes are here to brighten our fall and winter walks, so now is a perfect time to take a closer look at them.
This will be an easy outing, suitable for all fitness levels, but participants will need proper footwear and clothing suitable for cool, wet weather. Although it probably won’t cover a lot of ground, this field trip will extend over several hours, so be sure to bring lunch or at least a snack, as well as water. Masks are required as group members will be stopping to look and learn and maintaining a 2m distance may not always be possible.
Preregistration required – please email: <botany@NatureVancouver.ca> . 10 spaces available – NV members only. Please read NV Covid policy.
