🌿 Gardening with Native Plants to Increase Biodiversity – Kristen Miskelly

DESCRIPTION: Gardening with native plants can help maintain and increase local biodiversity, including the wildlife that depends on native flora. Join biologist and restoration specialist Kristen Miskelly, co-owner of Satinflower Nurseries in Saanich, to learn about how native plants can be used in home gardens and could even replace a lawn. Kristen will also discuss some of the work and projects happening at Satinflower Nurseries, where she and the team grow native plants and seeds and also offer native plant-related consultation on Southern Vancouver Island.
While our local climate is a lot wetter than her Saanich base, Kristen will also include advice for choosing native plants suitable for the Vancouver area.
Spring is a perfect time for making changes to your garden. Whether it’s adding a single shrub or tree, building a native plant bed, or creating a wildflower meadow, you are sure to find lots of interest in this illustrated talk.

PRESENTER: Kristen Miskelly and her husband James started their nursery business at Haliburton Community Organic Farm in 2013 under the name Saanich Native Plants. After adding additional nursery sites in Cobble Hill and Metchosin they changed the nursery name to Satinflower to better reflect their expanded scope.
A trained biologist, Kristen specialized in the botany and ecology of southeastern Vancouver Island. She has been teaching plant- and ecology-related courses and workshops for more than 15 years and is currently a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria, teaching courses in Ecological Restoration.

This presentation will be aired via Zoom Video Conferencing. On the Monday preceding the event, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in the weekly e-News.
