🦆Citizen Science In Habitat Protection
Citizen Science In Habitat Protection
In spring 2021 a federal Wildlife Officer from Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a stop work order to Trans Mountain Expansion Pipeline to protect a hummingbird nest – federally protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. The story made international news, and work was stopped for 5 months to avoid disrupting breeding.
The Community Nest Finding Network located active nests in several locations which delayed tree and grass clearing until the nesting period ended. In addition work was delayed along the Brunette river until after spawning.
This presentation by Dr. Christine Thuring will illustrate how citizen science can protect habitat in the face of major loss from large industrial projects.
Next to climate action, the preservation of habitat is one of the most critically important actions to ensure we are able to preserve biodiversity.
This presentation will be aired via Zoom Video Conferencing. On the Monday preceding the event, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in the weekly e-News. To join the talk on Thursday, click on that link after 7:15 pm. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm. Non-members are welcome and should Email denis@naturevancouver.ca well in advance to register for the link.
