Brohm Lake Wildflowers & Views (difficulty rating C6)
Hike Location: Brohm Lake Interpretive Forest;
Meeting Place and Start Time: contact leaders Teresa Gagné & Denis Laplante.
On this moderately paced hike around Brohm lake we can expect some fine views and are likely to see a wonderful array of spring wildflowers including leafless coral root orchids, pinesaps, and indian/ghost pipe. These fascinating ‘mycoheterotroph’ plants all lack chlorophyll and instead get their food by tapping into the mycorrhizal relationship between nearby tree and mushroom species. Depending how fast the spring has advanced we can also expect to see tiger lilies, wintergreens, twinflower, pipsissewa, bunchberry and more.
To avoid gathering when viewing plants, participants will be emailed an advance list of some special plants to look out for. Leaders will use a pointer to indicate plant locations.
We’ll be doing the moderate Brohm Lake and Bridge trails plus the steeper High Trail, Tantalus View and Cheakamus Loop trails. Total distance is ~8km with ~490m elevation gain on generally well-maintained trails, with several steep sections. Be prepared for some overgrown, rough or muddy bits. Trip goes rain or shine; bring lunch, drinks and suitable footwear & clothing for a day in the open.
Preregistration required – please email: <botany@NatureVancouver.ca> . 8 spaces available – NV members only, but preference will be given to those who haven’t hiked Brohm lake with us before. Please read NV Covid policy.
Information for a self-guided version of this hike will be available afterwards on request.
