🌿 Report on Hike in West Vancouver Arbutus grove April 2nd, 2025

Three hikers walked from Cranleigh Dr and Bluebell Dr in West Vancouver (near Marine Dr, to avoid $25 pay parking), and walked up Nelson Creek in the general direction of the old helipad, steep in places. This hike was posted on Nature Vancouver Events Calendar with very short notice, after a report from a friend that the Manzanitas were in flower – they were glorious. There are also thousands of Arbutus in this area, but not yet in flower. We…

Identifying Trees at English Bay

Identifying Trees at English Bay

Submitted by Nina Shoroplova Twenty seven of us gathered in Alexandra Park, Vancouver, on the morning of Saturday, March 22, to learn about the 160-plus trees that have been planted (including a few that are native) along English Bay Beach Park and Sunset Beach Park.  We admired the Heritage Red Oak,[i] perhaps planted on the first day of the new century, January 1, 1901.[ii] (Caroline took the photo at the end of the walk, which is why no one is there!)…

Birding in Terra Nova Natural Area

Birding in Terra Nova Natural Area

Submitted by Jan Lowcock Everyone had an eye on the weather forecast as 21 Nature Vancouver members and guests joined Neill and Jan for a birding field trip to Terra Nova Park in Richmond on March 29. The parking lot was active from the start with a flyover of 4 Sandhill Cranes and observation of one immature and 2 adult bald eagles. Stiff winds over the water made for an interesting flight pattern and view of a Pileated Woodpecker. We…

Trip Report – Birding in Stanley Park 23.03.2025 parts 1&2

Trip Report – Birding in Stanley Park 23.03.2025 parts 1&2

Stanley Park is a popular destination!  Harvey and Michelle posted their March 23 walk to enews and Meetup and the Meetup slots filled in about 1/2 an hour, so we decided to run two walks on the 23rd: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. However we had no way of predicting the atmospheric river that was forecast for Sunday.  Many attendees canceled and in the end only 10 hardy birders joined us under the heron rookery at…

Nature Walk along Burnaby Lake and Brunette River

Nature Walk along Burnaby Lake and Brunette River

Trip Report by Bev Ramey On 16 March 2025, Kelly Sekhon led a group of nine on a lovely spring walk from Still Creek, along the North side trails of Burnaby Lake and down the Brunette River. We followed about ten kilometres of trails including the Brunette-Fraser Regional Greenway to Hume Park. We enjoyed sightings of several birds along the way and especially the close-up views of the rich assortment of birds at Piper Spit and the viewing tower where…

Birding Field Trip: Pitt Addington Marsh March 1st

Birding Field Trip: Pitt Addington Marsh March 1st

Trip leaders Harvey Dueck and Michelle Baudais had originally planned to lead a trip to Pitt Lake in early February, but one of the attractions was the opportunity to see Trumpeter Swans. That’s not very practical if most of the lake and marsh is frozen. So we delayed and were happy to find open water and clear skies when we arrived at the Grant Narrows parking lot on the morning of Saturday March 1st. The trip began with scope views…

Birding Field Trip: Terra Nova 12 Feb 2025

Birding Field Trip: Terra Nova 12 Feb 2025

The walk at Terra Nova that was scheduled for Saturday February 8th was cancelled due to icy trail conditions, but a few of us looked ahead at the forecast and saw warmer temperatures predicted for mid-week and decided to reschedule to Wednesday for those who were available. Unfortunately it wasn’t warmer! Four brave birders joined Harvey Dueck and Michelle Baudais for a beautiful sunny morning of birding, but the paths remained icy and we had to move slowly to stay…
