Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) are a unique and endangered population of killera whales. They range from central California to Northern British Columbia waters and feed exclusively on fish, with Chinook salmon making up the bulk of their diet. Their population has been stagnant for a number of years, raising concerns for their continued existence. Dr. Haulena was involved in a recent study documenting skin lesions in this population, and has co-authored a paper on this condition.

Dr. Haulena is one of the world’s leading experts in marine mammals. He is the head veterinarian at the Vancouver Aquarium and the Director of the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.
