Whistler Week Trip Report

Whistler Week Trip Report

Five Nature Vancouver members camped and hiked for 5 days in the Whistler area.
We camped at Whistler Olympic Park Campground in Callaghan valley just below the ski jump. It was a pleasant quiet campground, smallish sites with grass for tents, grouse walking through, a building for dishwashing and bear-proof food storage, and a second building (with shop) for hot showers. Not many trees, so the stars were fantastic!

Rainbow Mountain, Fireweed.

Monday August 14:
Brandywine Falls to Bungee Bridge – 6.4km, 90m ascent, 1h44m
Audain Art Museum – 200m, 3m ascent, 1h30m. Fantastic collection of west coast (and other) art.

Tuesday August 15:
Rainbow Lake – 19.3km, 810m ascent, 8h
Despite being shaded most of the way, it was pretty hot. Beautiful forest and mountains. Amazed to see plenty of mushrooms (over 90 photos) despite heat and drought (Other hikes that week were short on mushrooms, as expected). Met a grouse family

Wednesday August 16:
High Note trail – 9.1km, 306m ascent, 5h30m
Two of us got summer lift passes (seniors ~$140), which provided a discount for other tickets. Caught the 11am (unreasonable lift schedule!) Peak Express from Gondola to Whistler peak. Awfully hot (around 30C) and (despite tanking up on liters of electrolyted water) experienced mild dehydration symptoms. Fantastic views despite mild smoke haze, met many flowers (esp. River Beauty and Pink Mimulus) and two marmots.

Thursday August 17:
Cheakamus Lake – 17km, 4h35m 159m ascent.
Such a beautiful forest and lake, and shady trail! Met a Pika at the start, and 3 young Mergansers at Singing Creek.

Friday August 18:
Walked along cross-country ski trails (paved or gravel roads – not great). Stopped at beautiful Alexander Falls just meters from the Winter Overnight Parking lot.
