🌿Introduction to seaweeds – Teresa Gagné
British Columbia is a veritable hot spot of seaweed biodiversity – of the 650+ species of macroalgae in the Pacific Northwest over 80% are found in BC waters. If your only images of seaweeds are with those washed up on beaches or wrapped around sushi, this presentation will change your thinking. You’ll learn about the main colour groupings, their intertidal and subtidal habitats, the best places to see them, and the important roles they play in nature, commerce and industry.
Teresa is an enthusiastic amateur field naturalist and a member of the NV Botany Section. A native Vancouverite, she enjoys nature of all sorts, but her special passions are tide-pooling, plant identification and helping people to develop what she calls “the art of noticing” the natural world around them. Of her interest in seaweeds she says ”Surprisingly, while I’ve always been fascinated by terrestrial plants, seaweeds are a relatively new passion for me. I’ve spent most of my tide-pooling trips moving them aside to look for animals like nudibranchs, anemones and sea stars and only recently began focussing my attention on these equally beautiful plants.”
This presentation will be via Zoom Video Conferencing. On the Monday preceding the event, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in the weekly e-News. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm. Non-members are welcome and should Email denis@NatureVancouver.ca a few days ahead to register for the link.
