27/Jan/2022
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Event Type

Extreme floods caused by failures of natural and constructed dams

Join Dr. John Clague (Simon Fraser University) for an online presentation on extreme floods. Dr. Clague is a long time Nature Vancouver member, and often speaks to educate us all on geology, geomorphology, natural hazards and climate change. He was on CBC last week about the volcanic eruption in Tonga!

During 2021, British Columbia had record high temperatures, a heat wave, which brought about drought, then vast and tragic fires. In November we had record rainfalls followed by terrible flooding in southwestern British Columbia and northwestern Washington.

Dr. Clague will talk about our recent floods and set the scene from a historic perspective, looking at North America and many types of floods that have occurred.

This presentation will be aired via Zoom Video Conferencing. On the Monday preceding the event, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in the weekly e-News. To join the talk on Thursday, click on that link after 7:15 pm. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm.  Non-members are welcome and should Email denis@NatureVancouver.ca well in advance to register for the link.
