Cheakamus Lake Backpacking Trip

Cheakamus Lake Backpacking Trip

Trip report by Christine Thuring From Thursday to Saturday (June 16-18), a small group of five backpackers enjoyed the trials and tribulations of early summer in Garibaldi Provincial Park. The wildflowers were quite behind schedule, there were 5 active bears in the area and the snow line was surprisingly low. Still, we had a fantastic time.  Our home base was the Cheakamus Lake Campground (at 850m elevation), where we occupied two sites, separated by a thicket of dogwood and hawthorn….

Diez Vistas Loop Trip (Buntzen Lake)

Diez Vistas Loop Trip (Buntzen Lake)

Report by Adele Tremblay On May 30 a half-dozen hardy hikers tackled the Diez Vistas, fully expecting a showery day and a longer-than-usual return along the west side of the lake. Amazingly, though, skies were brightening up by 9 a.m., and a passerby informed us that the suspension bridge had reopened, both promising omens for our day. At our first stop near the floating bridge, Elena provided some interesting history about the original Lake Beautiful and development of hydroelectric power…

Tree Walk in Jericho Park

Tree Walk in Jericho Park

Report & Photos by Helen Baker On April 30, Ryan Regier, a tree enthusiast and UBC librarian, and Laura Cottle, a forester, guided a group of tree-lovers through Jericho Park, an urban forest with a mix of deciduous and conifer trees. With Ryan and Laura’s help, we learned to identify some common trees by examining bark, leaves, needles and cones.  Starting at the east side of the park, we followed a path that runs by the duck pond and into the forest. Ryan…

Wildflowers at Whytecliff Park

Wildflowers at Whytecliff Park

Trip Report by Jane Srivastava Sometimes it’s good to slow down and look at what’s at your feet. On April 26, eleven of us enjoyed an easy walk to see many delicate wildflowers and other delights along the chain-link shaped trails on the bluffs in the northwest portion of Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver.  We met in the overflow parking lot. Then, passing red flowering currant in full bloom we followed a path from the far end of the parking lot,…

Queen Elizabeth Park Bird Walk

Queen Elizabeth Park Bird Walk

Trip Report by Jan Lowcock Fifteen Nature Vancouver birding enthusiasts joined Jan Lowcock for a walk in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park on Thursday April 28. The walk began in the rose garden and adjacent walkways under cloudy but dry conditions. We had a quiet start but were soon rewarded with good views of a Pacific-slope Flycatcher, which Harvey Dueck was able to capture in his scope.   (Thanks Harvey, for carrying and setting it up for the group).  The sun began…

Blue Gentian Lake Loop Trail

Blue Gentian Lake Loop Trail

Trip Report by Lyn Grants On Saturday, April 23, a group of twelve hiker met, the leaders Diane Fast and Lyn Grants for the Blue Gentian Loop Trail via Burfield, the Hollyburn Lodge, and the Baden Powell. Most of us wore Spikes, though snowshoes worked well and were useful on steeper slopes that were not tracked. Sun filtered through the trees. The snow was bright, not too icy, not too soft. Spirits were high. We did not go into Blue…

Jericho Beach Birding Field Trip

Jericho Beach Birding Field Trip

On Wednesday April 20th, Michelle Baudais and Harvey Dueck led a birding field trip at Jericho Park. The weather was fine and lots of birds were singing, especially the white-crowned sparrows. We had 20 participants registered for the trip, with 6 on the waiting list, suggesting there is demand for midweek as well as weekend field trips. If you’re considering leading a trip, please contact Bill Kinkaid or Janet Snell. Many people will appreciate your efforts. We started off along…

Black Mountain Loop Trail

Black Mountain Loop Trail

. Report and Photo by Lyn Grants On Thursday, 14th April, 2022, three hardy souls showed up for a spikes hike in fresh snow. Others were deterred by the new snow. A party ahead of us had tramped a trail. Spikes were sufficient but pace was slow. The views to newly snow capped mountains were spectacular, and so were the shifting clouds. The trail beyond Cabin Lake was not tramped down. We did not complete the loop. We enjoyed a…

Birding Field Trip at Iona

Birding Field Trip at Iona

Eleven enthusiastic birders joined trip leaders Michelle Baudais and Harvey Dueck for a birding field trip at Iona early on March 27th. Despite the forecast, the weather was pleasant and rain-free for the entire outing. We started off viewing a mixed flock of dunlin and black-bellied plover on the beach. Some of each species were in their winter and black-bellied breeding plumages, so it was a good teaching/learning flock. We went into the inner ponds next. All four ponds were…

Birding at Hastings Park

Birding at Hastings Park

Trip Report by Doug Cooper Ten keen naturalists, plus Maureen Collier and I, chose to take a chance that the early morning rain would not persist and met at the sanctuary at Hastings Park the morning of March 26th to see what signs of spring might also show up. We were rewarded with the sweet songs of a number of American Robins and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, yellow-rumped warblers, as well as the ethereal vocalizations of Varied Thrushes. Salmonberry bushes were in…
