False Creek Oyster Surveys – June 2023
There will be three iNaturalist survey sessions in the month of June. Some of the lowest tides of the year are coming up – and luckily for us, the lowest tide days are at the weekends of June 3/4 and June 17/18. Details of the locations and dates/times are given below. We have found significant Pacific oyster populations in the locations that we have surveyed so far and expect to find many more.
We welcome new and existing volunteers to join us for these upcoming dates. Over the next few months, we will be surveying the oyster population in False Creek using both iNaturalist and hands-on quadratic surveying. (New volunteers will be given an orientation and iNaturalist review.) All surveyors are welcome to participate in as many (or as few) surveys as you like.
Survey Dates
Sunday, June 4 (12:00 – 3:00pm) – Location: Habitat Island, Olympic Village (South shore of False Creek)
Saturday, June 17 (10:30 – 1:30pm) – Location: Cooper’s Park, east of Cambie Bridge (North shore of False Creek)
Sunday, June 18 (11:30 – 2:30pm) – Location: Cooper’s Park, west of Cambie Bridge or David Lam Park (North shore of False Creek). (Final location decision will be made closer to the date.)
