Plants on Islands: A biogeographical tour through the Salish Sea
Peter Dunwiddie ‘s talk will focus on the plants that have found their way onto the myriad islands in the San Juan and Gulf Island archipelago. In addition to providing a sweeping overview of the diverse flora of the islands, he will take a close look at many of the smallest islands that are rarely, if ever, visited. This tour will draw from over 15 years studying the island plants from a geographical perspective, seeking to understand the patterns of plant distributions – what grows where, how they got there, and how and why island floras are changing.
Peter Dunwiddie is an affiliate professor in the Biology Department and in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at the University of Washington. He has worked as an ecologist and conservation biologist for more than 35 years, focusing on the recovery of rare species, conservation planning, fire ecology, and restoration of native habitats. He is intimately familiar with many of the more remote islands in the San Juans, having conducted detailed inventories of the plants on over 150 islands. Peter has published widely in diverse fields, and is the author of several books.
Fun facts: Peter lived for 13 years on Nantucket Island, during which time he flew his own plane all over New England setting fires for a living.
