LEWIS’S WOODPECKER – B.C.’s most colorful woodpecker

Our presenter Tanya Luszcz, is a Species at Risk Monitoring Biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service. She  lives in B.C.’s Okanagan area and has studied the Lewis’s Woodpecker for many years.

In Canada it only breeds in B.C., where it is estimated there are fewer than 1000 individuals. In 2010 it was assessed as “Threatened” by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).

With a glossy greenish-black head, back, wings and tail, pastel-pink belly, gray collar and breast and red face, this truly is the most uniquely colored woodpecker species in B.C. It forages like a flycatcher and flies like a crow.

Tanya will share various interesting aspects of its biology, habitat and distribution, as well as threats to its survival and plans for its protection.

This presentation will be aired via Zoom Video Conferencing. On the Monday preceding the event, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in the weekly e-News. To join the talk on Thursday, click on that link after 7:15 pm. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm. Non-members are welcome and should Email denis@naturevancouver.ca  well in advance to register for the link.
