Trip to ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park

Report by Lona Lonergan

ƛ̓éxətəm (tlahutum) Regional Park formerly known as Colony Farm was the destination for our October 16, 2023 Nature Vancouver Walk. Thirteen people, thirteen degrees and pouring rain – it was spectacular!

Cynthia Crampton organized the trip, Sel from Enjoy the Journey drove the brand new 24 seat van. Larry Cowen joined the group for a short walk and shared his absolute love and devotion to the area, Lindsey Lorence was our photographer.

The gorgeous golden colour of the fall grasses, the Hooded Merganser, the chum in the Coquitlam River (we couldn’t see them but we knew they were there). Countless birds were taking shelter in the fields and bushes.

The Community Garden was a secret gem: 550 plots over a seven-acre site; 350 members with a seven year wait list to get in! What a success. Each garden was unique. A whole day could have been spent just walking up and down the rows.

ƛ̓éxətəm (tlahutum) is a Kwikwetlem First Nations word that means “to be invited”. It was an incredible privilege to enjoy the area with members of Nature Vancouver.
