Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Trip report by Leader Tom Plath

This was another beautiful day for a walk at Reifel Refuge. On October 27, 2018, a dozen or so participants were rewarded with good looks at several raptors. Scope views were had of an obliging Merlin perched near the entrance and then minutes later an immature Peregrine Falcon using the same snag. Stunning views were had of an adult Black-crowned Night Heron watched preening in the open only a few metres away. Hundreds of Long-billed Dowitchers were in the west field as were a couple of Dunlin and along the dyke a soaring immature Rough-legged Hawk and a distant perched Cooper’s Hawk that took a while to ID. Looking forward to the next field trip.
