Turkey Vultures might be the most misunderstood and underappreciated birds in North America. Very odd-looking indeed! However they truly are nature’s sanitary engineer. Their very specialized digestive and immune systems allow them to clean up the remains of creatures that have died of disease or parasites, thus helping prevent their spread to other creatures.
David Manning lives on Pender Island and has been a birder for over 60 years. He fell in love with Vultures at age 65 when he stumbled upon a small Turkey Vulture chick peeking out of its nest cave. His program is on the 3 vultures of North America with an emphasis on a Turkey Vulture nest site he observed from mating to migration. His recently published Turkey Vulture picture book, “The Old Man and the Vultures“, will be available for purchasing and signing.
