Event Type

Join us on our next Nature Sketchbook outing at Tatlow and Volunteer Parks! All are welcome to this casual get-together to nature journal in these two parks near MacDonald St and Point Grey Road. “Centuries ago, the stream originally known as ‘First Creek’ flowed north from what is now West 20th Avenue through Tatlow and Volunteer parks, before entering English Bay. Tatlow Creek is a culturally significant place for the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations due to its proximity to a densely populated coastal village. Over time, as a result of colonial practices and urban development, Tatlow Creek, like many of Vancouver’s streams and creeks, was buried and lost to history.” (https://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/first-creek-restored-as-part-of-tatlow-park-renewal-july-2024.aspx)

In 2016, the Vancouver Park Board and City Engineering team, began work to daylight the creek and connect it to English Bay while also improving the public’s access to the beach and shoreline. The work is now complete and lovely pollinator gardens have been planted. There will be a high(ish) tide during the session, but we will still be able to access and explore the shoreline as well as both parks.

Bring a pencil or pen; a notepad or sketchbook; and any other favorite, portable art materials if you have them. Dress for the weather. Bring a snack, hat and water bottle. Optional supplies: camera and magnifying glass.

Parking is available on the surrounding residential streets.

Pre-registration is required. Please contact:  blahnorinaka@hotmail.com with the subject line August Sketch Group. Limit 15 participants. Priority to Nature Vancouver members. This event is weather dependent. Details and map will be sent to participants before the event.
