Discovering the Hidden Yews of Pacific Spirit Park
Pacific Yews are one of the strangest and rarest trees in Vancouver Forests. It is a deadly tree, used for poisons and weapons for centuries, but also a source of life, being one of the only conifers with berry-like fruits and also the source of a potent anti-cancer drug. The Yew is hard to distinguish from our native Hemlock and Douglas-fir and almost impossible to find in Pacific Spirit Park. Come learn how to identify Yews and some fascinating facts about this one-of-a-kind tree. The walk focuses on the ecology of and identifying Pacific Yew in Pacific Spirit Park. There are a number of Pacific yews on the northern stretch of the Spanish Trail. Meeting place: Chancellor Blvd & Chancellor trail (north side of park).
