Bird Walk at the Hastings Park Sanctuary
Join leader Doug Cooper for a two-hour bird walk at the Hastings Park Sanctuary in East Vancouver on Saturday, November 9. The pathway around the sanctuary is wide, gravelled and mostly level. Washrooms are available on site. Birders of all stages and varieties are welcome. The overwintering duck flock is beginning to grow. A Pileated Woodpecker has been reported recently, as was a Black Phoebe. Two pairs of Great Blue Herons nested in the sanctuary last summer, one of which raised a chick to nearly fledgling. Sadly, the chick was predated on by the resident Bald eagles. The eagles did successfully raise two fledglings. Such is the way of world at times. The local Cooper’s Hawk pair raised at least four fledglings, the runt of which was rescued from likely starvation and rehabilitated at the OWL raptor rescue facility.
Pre-registration is required, and the trip is limited to 12 participants. Please contact Doug Cooper at hdcooper@gmail.com to register for the trip and for information on the meet-up location. Priority will be given to Nature Vancouver members. Loaner binoculars are available on request.
