Report by Peter Candido The 2024 Vancouver Christmas Bird Count took place on Saturday December 14th.  On count day a powerful windstorm swept over the Vancouver area with gusts up to 100 kph. This severely affected observation conditions, particularly in areas near the water. Heavy wave action made visibility of birds on the water extremely difficult, and coverage of Area Y (English Bay) by boat was not possible.  This explains the low numbers of sea ducks, cormorants, grebes and loons on the count. Coverage of forested…

2023 Vancouver Christmas Bird Count

Report by Peter Candido The 2023 Vancouver Christmas Bird Count took place on Saturday December 16th.  Volunteers were very pleased to have a dry day for the count this year, with partly sunny conditions and temperatures from 7-9 °C.  Winds were light and seas were calm.  The tide was very high for the first half of the day and dropped only slightly in the afternoon. Report by Peter Candido The 2022 Vancouver Christmas Bird Count took place on Saturday December 17th. The morning saw intermittent rain, the temperature was 2-3 C and winds were light at about 7 kph from the east. Light fog offshore in the morning limited visibility for observing waterbirds, though the sea was fairly calm. The rain ended around noon and skies cleared somewhat. Report by Peter Candido The 2021 Vancouver Christmas Bird Count took place on Saturday December 18th under challenging conditions, at least until mid-day.  In the morning participants were faced with steady rain throughout the area, and wind from the SSE of about 16 kph or higher along the coast.  The rain tapered off around noon and skies began to clear, resulting in relatively pleasant conditions in the afternoon.  Poor conditions on the water in the morning meant that the group who usually survey…

Report by Peter Candido The 2019 Vancouver Christmas Bird Count took place on December 14th under good conditions, ranging from cloudy with showers in some areas and some clear patches in the morning to broken clouds and partly sunny in the afternoon.  Winds were light at 6-9 km/h. and visibility was very good for the coastal portions.
