Bird Photography at Iona Beach Regional Park

Trip Report by Adam Wang

On October 15, a group of eight Nature Vancouver members and guests participated in a bird photo field trip at Iona Beach Regional Park. The trip started at 2:30pm and lasted until the rain came in the late afternoon. The park is a popular destination for birdwatchers and photographers, as it offers a variety of habitats and species.

The group first explored the bushes near the parking lot, where they spotted some songbirds such as Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, and White-crowned Sparrows. The group then moved to the beach, where they were greeted by a large flock of snow geese. The geese were resting and feeding on the beach and occasionally flying over the water, creating a spectacular sight. The group also observed some actions, such as a ring-billed gull trying to swallow a full mouth-wide fish, and a great blue heron flying by very closely. The group also had some photo opportunities with a group of Dunlins and one Sanderling.

The trip was a success, as the group enjoyed the scenery and captured many beautiful photos of the birds. They exchanged tips and tricks for bird photography.
