2023 Hugh Hamilton Memorial Scholarships

Undergrad Scholarship – Austin Molby

Austin is a Vancouver local previously working as an engineer designing railroad parts across North America. After noticing the differences between engineering and environmental projects and his love for nature, he decided to return to school to get his bachelor’s in Ecological Restoration. Recently graduated, Austin wants to continue his education in the future with a masters in Civil/Environmental engineering to get skills in engineering solutions geared towards restoration in the hopes of allowing restoration teams to tackle even larger projects while balancing ecosystem processes, human development and creating a better future for everyone.

Graduate Scholarship – Jacqueline Huard

Jacqueline is a UBC master’s student in Dr. Tara Martin’s Conservation Decision Lab working with Dr. Cliff Robinson at DFO and WWF Canada. She lives in Stz’uminus traditional territory in Ladysmith with her partner John, and son John Gavid. In the big picture her research focuses on addressing management gaps to support better conservation decision making for Pacific sand lance, an understudied species with a big role in the coastal food web.  Specifically in her first Chapter Jacqueline combined citizen science, and statistical models to map Pacific sand lance spawning habitat, and in her second chapter she conducted an expert elicitation to assess the threats to Salish Sea sand lance.
