Summer Camp – Big Bar Ranch

Summer Camp – Big Bar Ranch

UPDATE: Jan 2022

The Camp Committee is very sad and disappointed but, because of the uncertainty around Covid, has decided to postpone the summer camp at Big Bar to 2023.  The traditional summer camp, with 45 people in each week, requires long-range planning and decision-making and it is difficult to make operational changes at short notice. For 2023, Camp 1 is scheduled for July 9-16 and Camp 2 for July 16-23 (July 2-9 is unavailable).  Elly is contacting people who have deposits for Camps 1 and 2 in 2022.

There are vacancies on the Camp Committee, and we now need people to join the Camp Committee.  Among the work required throughout the year is planning in general, budgeting, equipment manager, finding and hiring cooks, and finding locations for future camps.  Among the tasks of each summer camp are camp managers (and trainees to be camp managers), truck drivers, hike co-ordinators. Please volunteer so that we can continue to have summer camps!  Email co-chairs Diane Fast and Anne George at if you are interested or have any questions.

As in previous years when the NV Summer Camp has been cancelled, people may want to find a small group and co-ordinate their own camping experience. Nature Vancouver members are encouraged to propose and help organize get-aways for smaller groups (eg. up to ten people). These can be organized through the existing field trips system.

UPDATE: Feb 2021

The Camp Committee met via Zoom in January 2021 to review whether the 2021 Big Bar camp would be held this summer after being postponed in 2020.  In the interest of everybody’s well-being, it is with regret that we have decided to cancel the 2021 summer camp as well.

Instead, the Big Bar summer camp will be held next year from July 3-10 and July 10-17, 2022.

  • Campers who are registered and would like to keep their spot for 2022 may leave their deposits in place.
  • Those campers who would like to withdraw at this time should contact the registrar (Elly Brok) to arrange for the return of the deposit.
  • Individuals who were on the camp waitlist may still hold their place on that list or contact the registrar if they wish to cancel their place on the waitlist.
  • If and when there are additional spots available for the 2022 camp, we will place a notice in the e-News.

We anticipate a very special summer camp at Big Bar when conditions improve. Several recces were held last summer to explore hiking trails and natural history and we found that this area is rich with opportunities.
